Important Information Regarding Baseball & Softball Bats for the 2012 Season-
Please Read before Purchasing a New Bat!

In the Fall, many retailers offer sales on their baseball and softball equipment.  Before running out and getting a "great deal" on a bat, however, please note that the Flossmoor Baseball and Softball Board of Directors will be considering important new bat restrictions that many leagues and governing bodies are adopting.  While the Board has not yet adopted these restrictions, it is quite possible that it will do so, and the Board wants its Parents and Players to know of these possibilities so that informed purchasing decisions can be made.

"BBCOR .50"

Beginning in 2012, all High School and College bats and the bats allowed by many other youth leagues will be required to have a designation (a painted sticker) of "BBCOR .50."

For a simplified explanation, the BBCOR .50 bats are made to perform like wooden bats.  The "metal" used for the BBCOR .50 bats will not "give" as much as the old metal bats so that the new bats won't have the same "trampoline effect" as the old bats.  In turn, this will mean that the ball will come off the bat at a lower speed than with the old bats, which enhances the safety of the fielders (as well as on-deck batters, coaches, field umpires and spectators).

This is a really good article that explains (fairly simply) what the new rule is and why it's being used:

This is a good article that talks about how various of the BBCOR bats performed, which (in turn) highlights some of the "differences" that will exist between the "old" bats and the "new" BBCOR bats (e.g., vibration, weight distribution):

This is a list of softball bats that meet the new standards:

2 1/4" Diameter Restriction

Additionally, a proposal will be made to the Board to adopt a 2 1/4" bat diameter restriction for Mustang and Diamond leagues.  (Such a restriction already exists for Pinto and Bantam.)  Players sometimes refer to these as "skinny barrel" bats, in contrast to the "big barrel" bats that have diameters of 2 5/8" (and even 2 3/4"), and which are prevalent in Bronco, Pony, Junior and Senior Leagues.  Many other leagues have used a 2 1/4" restriction for players at the Mustang and Diamond age levels, because of safety considerations.

Again, the Flossmoor Baseball and Softball Board has not yet adopted any of these new restrictions, but given the safety concerns that have given rise to these restrictions, it is very likely that the board may do so.

Please factor this information into your decisions when shopping for a bat for next season
.
